Automatic watches are wound and powered by kinetic energy from the user’s movement. The normal clockwise and counter-clockwise movements of the user's arm and wrist cause a semicircular weight within the enclosure to pivot and thus wind the spring, giving the watch power. Keeping the watch powered serves multiple purposes; the watch will keep proper time when not in use, and the delicate mechanics of the watch will keep moving so they do not lock up and become damaged.
